What is Civil Service?

Civil Services are the backbone of public administration in India. The civil service system is designed to ensure efficient governance and implementation of government policies at various levels. Civil servants are responsible for maintaining law and order, implementing development programs, and serving the public interest.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination annually to recruit candidates for various prestigious services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS), among others.

Every year, approximately 10 lakh students appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, but only about 1,000 selections are made across all services. This makes it one of the most competitive examinations in the country, requiring dedicated preparation and comprehensive understanding of various subjects.

The examination consists of three stages: Preliminary Examination (Prelims), Main Examination (Mains), and Personality Test (Interview). Each stage tests different aspects of a candidate's knowledge, analytical ability, and personality traits essential for civil service roles.
